About 02 Arena

The O2 arena is a multi-purpose indoor arena located within The O2, yet the arena is an separate building, independent from all the other buildings of the O2 complex, taking up 40 per cent of the dome that houses the different O2 facilities. It is one of the first American style arenas in London and has a capacity of up to 20,000, which makes it one of the largest indoor arenas in Europe. The O2 Arena’s seating system can be modified whilst its ground surface is also very flexible and can be turned into an ice rink, basketball court or concert venue. The O2 Arena can also be hired as an exhibition space, conference venue or just for private events. The construction of the O2 Arena began in 2003 and was completed in 2007. Many of London’s music venues experience problems with echoing; this was one of the reasons why the O2 Arena was built. Sound absorbing material was used for the roof of the arena and while strategically placed seats further reduce echoing. The Arena is the world’s third most popular concert venue, right behind the Manchester Evening News Arena and Madison Square Garden in New York. Musical events in the past included performances of artists such as Tom Jones, Kaiser Chiefs, Basement Jaxx, Metallica, Celine Dion and Sir Elton John (amongst many others). In addition to the 02 arena being used for sports events (the arena will be hosting the 2012 Olympic Games gymnastics and basketball finals for example) and comedy shows, it shows its flexibility by also playing host to events such as Disney On Ice or Strictly Come Dancing!
