Bentalls Shopping Centre was designed with Hampton Court in mind, hence its grand façade which forms part of the department store of the same name. On the inside the atrium ceiling has been fitted with thousands of fibre optic lights in an attempt to imitate the stars; the ceiling is also higher than Westminster Abbey’s. The mall opened in 1990 and has over 80 shops that include electrical stores, clothing, jewellery, sports, books, footwear and gift shops. You will even find estate agents, hairdressers and of course the Bentalls department store - incidentally this is where the singer Petula Clark gave her first ever performance as a child. Food and refreshments are provided at various cafes and fast food outlets: there is Caffe Nero, Carluccio’s, McDonald’s, Starbucks and TGI Fridays as well as an ice cream parlour, sushi bar with conveyor belt and juice bar serving made-to-order smoothies. Little known fact: Bentalls was the first UK shopping centre to become entirely non-smoking. Kingston is one of the most popular shopping areas in London outside of zone 1, therefore the mall tends to have a steady stream of customers throughout the day. Late night shopping is on Thursdays.
