Sundays in London

Debby's Blog

I am not a big fan of Sundays. The good thing is that I am off from work, but most of the time there is not much to do in my hometown. But not in London. The early mornings can be a bit boring (for me that is), but at midday the shops in Regent Street and Oxford Street are open for shoppers. Ofcourse there are cinemas and museums aswell. Theatres are closed as Sunday is the day when the actors and the people behind the scene's have their well earned day off. Another thing I like about London on Sundays is that The Mall is closed for trafic. That gives people an opportunity to have a nice stroll, ride their bikes or rolerblades. You can extend the stroll to St James's Park where you have a great view on both London Eye and Buckingham Palace. Especially on a lovely sunny day the place is crowded. Usually I don't like big crowds, but here there is room for everybody. Sunday is a day for travelers as a lot of people go back home on that day, but a stroll on The Mall is a nice thing to do before you leave London. Not specteculair, but a nice and quiet end of your stay in London. Trafalger Square is nearby and has 2 great museums you can visit after or before your stroll. The National Gallery and The National Portrait Museum are a favorite with a lot of people. I prefer the Portrait Gallery, but I tell more about that some other time. At one end of The Mall is Buckingham Palace. I am sure The Mall will be packed with people on April 29 to see the Royal Family on the balcony and to see the newly weds kiss eachother. On other times you might see the changing of the guards. An impressive thing to see. It is good to see that England still has its traditions. Here in Holland, things are not like that. Clarence House is close by and you can see the guards pacing up and down the drive way. I must say that I have respect for these men. I can't do what they do, I am not the person to pace up and down for hours. So if you have some time left you can have a nice stroll and mingle with Londoners and travelers. For me it is a great ending of a trip to London.
