The hustle and bustle of London

Debby's Blog

Last week I went to the cinema. It has been a while since I saw a film in a cinema and Johnny English Reborn gave me a good oportunity to have a nice evening out. When I went home after the film, I noticed how quiet it was on the streets. Ofcourse it was a Wednesday evening, but a city like Rotterdam (not my hometown), should be bubbling. It was not, it was boring to be honest. What a difference with London. Going to the cinema there is a whole evening out for me. Before visiting the cinema, I go out for a drink, with friends, if they are with me. Then we go to the cinema. The London cinemas are like heaven to me. Not all ofcourse, but I love the Emporium cinema at Leicester Square. It gives you the feeling that you are the star. You can buy your tickets on-line, but I always buy my ticket at the desk. Sometimes you can choose your own seat. When the tickets are bought we go in to get popcorn and drinks. After the film it is time to eat somewhere. Here in Holland, every restaurtant is closed, and the pubs are empty, or full of strange people. In London, you can visit a restaurant and have a dinner after seeing a film (or a play, or musical, whatever your chooise is). If you're in the Leicester Square area, you don't have to go far. Soho is around the corner, and there are lots of nice restaurants there. It always struck me that London is so full of life, even late in the evening. When I take the tube to my hotel, or friend's place, I always see lots and lots of people there. Not only Londoners, but also a lot of tourists. Maybe that is the thing why we don't have much people on the streets late in the evening. Amsterdam is a lot like London, but Rotterdam can be very empty after ten in the evening. As you all know, I like London a lot, and I always feel very happy to be there. Going to the cinema is a wonderful experience there. I visited a cinema in Rotterdam once, and it felt like I was in a pack of people that are on their way to the butcher. You buy your ticket, buy your snack, see the film and be out. The cinema itself feels like a huge, empty place. The ones I visited in London were nicer and the staff were friendlier. I am looking forward to my next trip to London, and to see another film there. Another good thing is that there are no subtitles, so I don't get disturbed when I see a fault in the translation. That happens more than you know. Unfortunatly I won't be visiting London this year, but I make it up next year. If I really get homesick, I watch Johnny English Reborn, which have some amazing shots of London. And you get to see Rowan Atkinson race the empty Mall in a wheelchair.
