Seven Ways to Reduce Allergies...

London Healthy Living - Attitude To Food Blog

Summer can be a really tough time for allergy suffers, so I figured some info’ on the subject would be timely. If you’re reliant on over-the-counter medications and sneeze and sniff your way though the season, with itchy throat and/or watery eyes, making a few changes to your diet can really help to reduce symptoms.

Here are seven little tweaks and changes that may help reduce how many attacks you experience, along with the severity of them…

1. Dairy is a key allergen so try switching to a non dairy alternative. There are some great options now, from oat milk, along with quinoa, nut and seed milks …give them a try and see which one you like best. There was a time when you could only get them in a health food store, but now they’re widely available in high street supermarkets too.

2. Farmers use more pesticides on some fruits and vegetables, so where lots are used choose to buy organic to reduce toxic load on your body. Here's a handy list: http://attitudetofood.co.uk/2012/07/01/the-clean-fifteen-and-dirty-dozen/

3. Replace polyunsaturated, partially hydrogenated oil along with transfats with Omega 3, 6 and 9 oils. How? One quick way is to leave processed junk foods on the supermarket shelf.

4. Concerned you may be intolerant to certain foods? The key culprits are gluten, corn, soy and sugar. Find out whether you are intolerant for real by omitting them from your diet for around eight weeks …then slowly add them back in, preferably one at a time. Your body will soon tell you whether it’s happy about it or not.

5. Replace animal protein with plant based proteins …you can do this by combining lentils, pulses and legumes with e.g. rice so that you get all nine essential amino acids …or you can add a variety of complete proteins to your meals. These include hemp seeds, quinoa, amaranth, spirulina, goji berries, bee pollen and cocao …all the more reason to sign-up for a raw chocolate class!

6. Use extra virgin olive oil every time you need to use oil, whether it be on salad dressings or roasting and frying foods.

7. Try a teaspoon of local honey every day …it acts as a vaccine against the local allergens, and may strengthen immunity against them.
