Sculpture in the City

London Event Reviews by May B

When I’m working, I often race around our wonderful City with scarcely time to smell the coffee, let alone admire the architecture. But I was stopped in my tracks by some sculpture in the City yesterday.

I was about to attend a meeting at the fabulous Leadenhall Building – you know, the cheesegrater-type building that stands opposite the iconic Lloyd’s of London building. I stepped back to take in the view of the site where the new “Scalpel” building is to be built.

And in a small square nearby I noticed an amazing piece of sculpture – 12 pairs of bronze shoes and boots, connected in a circle by real shoe-laces. It’s a piece by Israeli artist Sigalit Landau (who lived in London for a while) called “O my friends, there are no friends” and a comment on the future, community and regeneration and is actually quite astonishing.

A nearby plaque showed that there are 14 pieces in the “Sculpture in the City 2015” which is sponsored by all manner of property and financial institutions as well as the Corporation of London. I will be making an effort to locate and visit them all as I rush around to meetings to find a quiet moment for culture and reflection.
