Scottish Seaweed Skincare from Ishga

Love London

Seaweed. No longer merely the preserve of soggy beaches, but a bona fide super-ingredient that might be your skin's new secret weapon.

When I was in Glasgow back in February I came across local Hebridean brand Ishga, which harvests the potent powers 100% organic Scottish seaweed to create its range of skincare. Harvested in the Hebrides, some of the cleanest waters in the world, it contains natural anti-oxidants that have anti-ageing properties which help protect the skin (but, thankfully, doesn't smell quite the same as it does when washed up on the beach...)

Ishga - derived from the Gaelic word for water - uses natural oils such as thistle, jojoba, apricot kernel and macadamia nut alongside its seaweed, as well as ingredients like cucumber extract and aloe vera concentrate. The Seaweed extract which forms the basis of the ishga skincare range is unique; it's produced by combining hand harvested seaweed with natural spring water, using a low temperature extraction process, to give an extract which is as pure as nature. The low temperature extraction ensures that all the goodness of the seaweed is maintained in the extract, whilst excluding non-beneficial compounds which can give rise to unpleasant odours. The resulting mineral rich extract is then blended with other carefully selected organic ingredients to create their skincare range. Clever huh?

While there is a whole host of delicious products for face and body from which to choose (I had a massage in Scotland with the Invigorating Body Oil - a total winner) I'v been sampling the facial range recently and have to say I'm impressed. The Hebridean Marine Toner (£25) includes anti-oxidant brown algae seaweed, cleansing and antiseptic lemon rind, hydrating aloe vera and uplifting mandarin essential oil to leave skin seriously soothed.

The Regenerating Facial Serum (£60) has become a daily go-to. It's a slightly pricey purchase, but after a few weeks it's left my skin feeling perked up and revived better than the heavy creams I've been using. Finally my third favourite has become the refreshing Exfoliating Face Mask (£35). This gentle mask containing kelp seaweed powder gives a big boost to tired skin and with just one use there was a noticeable difference to my dull, lacklustre face.

If you're looking to shake up your skincare regime give it a go, available online from www.ishga.co.uk
