Seduction, sparkles and suspenders at the Rocky Horror Show in Richmond

London Event Reviews by May B

What can I say? I love the Rocky Horror Show and just about any production brings a smile to my face and lifts my spirits. Last night at Richmond Theatre did not disappoint and the place was literally rocking.

Although only a minority were brave enough to break out their Columbia, Riff Raff, Brad, Janet and Frank-N-Furter outfits, just about every member of the audience participated in the fun.

Without needing any cues, there were waving arms for “Science Fiction –double feature”, lights to “Over at the Frankenstein place”, dancing to “The Time Warp” and there were vocal responses to most of the actors’ lines.

Liam Tamne channelled enough of Tim Curry’s essence to delight the audience while managing to put his own mischievous and manipulative stamp on Frank-N-Furter.

Steve Punt, as narrator, deserves a special mention. Not only were his delivery and ad libs excellent but he parried a torrent of both risque and clever retorts from the enthusiastic audience with warmth, humour, charm and wit.

And I think everyone noted the incredible physique of Dominic Andersen as Rocky whilst the willowy and extremely flexible Kay Murphy – playing Magenta – was mesmerising.

There were times when the volume felt a tad too loud and there was some slight sound distortion, but the band – elevated to the top rear of the stage – played wonderfully.
