The worst of London's neighbourhoods

We Are London

From the highest rates of theft to E. coli-ridden kebabs, we've rounded up the worst bits of the capital's neighbourhoods in easy, digestible form (yep, that pun was intended).

Crime rates
Naturally, people's top concern before moving to the big city is crime. Top of the table is the borough of Westminster, which has the highest rates of crime not only for London but for the whole of the UK. This includes thefts on Oxford Street and robberies of affluent homes in Bayswater.

Binge-drinking
Islington has the most cases of binge-drinking. There are also more single people living here than in any other borough. Perhaps the two are related?

Broadband
For some reason, the borough of Haringey has the slowest broadband in London, so friends in Wood Green and Crouch End, you might have trouble viewing this page. Interestingly London ranks behind Romania's capital Bucharest in terms of internet speed.

Air pollution
Kensington & Chelsea may be the richest borough, but it's also the one with the most air pollution. We were surprised to see it even tops the rates of traffic-congested Westminster. A study commissioned by the Department of Health found that one in 12 deaths here are caused by pollutants in the air expelled by car engines.

Obesity
People living in the 'burbs are among the most obese in the country. Particularly in Hillingdon, the area furthest to the west which includes Heathrow. It's close to the countryside, i.e. Oxford and Windsor, which could be why it also boasts the most car owners. This makes for another reason to ditch the car and walk more.

Drug abuse
Anyone who's ever visited Camden has seen the gangs of young lads hanging around Camden Lock trying to sell weed to passersby. It's also a sad, common sight to witness homeless men passed out on heroin, and there are many hostels here for people with substance abuse problems. The main cause of death for men is still chronic drug abuse at 38%, higher than anywhere in the capital.

Food hygiene
Enfield is officially the worst place in the UK for food hygiene. Takeaway shops in Edmonton and Winchmore Hill are among those shamed in a feature by Which? magazine that looked at the Food Standard Authority's zero ratings in 2015. Thing twice about getting that kebab.

Litter
Surprisingly, leafy Merton has the filthiest streets in England. Chat to locals and they'll moan about Wimbledon's tennis fortnight, which adds congestion and rubbish to the streets. But it's a problem all year round, as a survey by the GMB union found the levels of litter on the streets and pavements to be unacceptable.
