The best of London's neighbourhoods

We Are London

Want to know where the happiest place is? The rudest? The cheapest? We've rounded up the best of London's neighbourhoods.

Cost
All conversations about living in London inevitably involve how expensive it is. Right now the most affordable area is Barking & Dagenham. Granted, glamour isn't the first thing that springs to mind about B&D, as most people's first thought is the Ford plant and the thousands of people who lost their jobs here a few years back. But putting that aside it's just 15 minutes on the train from the city and there are plenty of stylish flats with balconies being built on the riverside - the southern tip of the borough is along the Thames after all. Snap up a home here before the gentrification train rolls in.

Diversity
One of the greatest things about the capital is its diversity - the mix of cuisines, people, music and shops selling wares from all over the world. Researchers from Cambridge University also found that the most diverse areas (including Hackney, Tower Hamlets and Lambeth) have shown the biggest economic growth over the last six years. The most multicultural neighbourhood is Plaistow, which local councillor Forhad Hussain went so far as labelling the most diverse place in the world.

Clean air
Hampstead and Chiswick are the cleanest neighbourhoods, not surprising considering Hampstead's lush Heath and Chiswick's all-round leafiness. If you're looking for parks, suburban Bromley has more green spaces than anywhere else, the most famous being Crystal Palace Park.

Low crime
The lowest crime rate is in affluent, peaceful Richmond. We're not suggesting leaving the front door open all night - this is London after all - but Richmond has less robberies and violent crimes than any other neighbourhood. It also boasts the longest life expectancy.

Happiness
Ever wondered where the happiest place in London is? It's down south, particularly in Fulham and Parsons Green. Design firm Clubhouse Studios researched how people interact with each other, whether they smile or frown in the street, show random acts of kinds or display aggression. If you want to see more happy faces, move south of the river.

Letting off steam
People in Enfield are the most foul-mouthed on social media. Lecturer and data expert Ed Manley did a comprehensive study to find out which areas have the sweariest residents. Turns out those living in Southgate, Edmonton and Palmers Green are the most likely to have a good old ranting sesh on Twitter, especially at the end of the day.
