I have to disagree with both the previous reviews, having been to the Tankard with friends I found it friendly and laid back with excellent pizza, so much so that I booked the upstairs room (which is free!) for an evening reception for work, the manager was hugely helpful, very friendly and we had a fantastic evening. I'm going back again in a couple of weeks for a staff party and will continue to use it whenever I can.

I came upon the above comments by accident & couldn't agree more with K. I have been living in the area for 10+ years and have seen the place slide from being a charming 'local' into a tiresome chain-gang operation. Despite the good-looking promos ('Tuesday pizza day,' '5-7 Happy hour'), the unfriendliness -- no, sheer arrogance -- of the staff kills any joy of going there. Last time I was there, someone had spilt a drink on the floor and several people nearly broke bones slipping while the manager (?) looked on unconcerned. It takes probably 10 mins. to get a drink. The great & good thing going for it (in the summer) is the wonderful roof terrace. But otherwise, no thanks!

I had a really bad experience here. I booked the upstairs room for a party because I was told they had a licence till 2am. At 11pm on the night they told me they were closing at 12 because they only had a licence till 12. No one apologised. When I complained, they tried to throw their contract at me saying they had the right to close at 12 if numbers fell below a certain level. This was dishonest because they told us at 11pm that they'd be closing at 12, because they didn't have a later licence. Eventually they agreed to give back my booking fee, but still no one apologised. I found the whole thing really unpleasant.
