All In London Review

classy yet with a mellow and laid back tempo

Situated in the mellow streets of St John’s Wood, Lord’s Tavern is a quiet restaurant and bar. It has a smart and professional feel, classy yet with a mellow and laid back tempo.

Sidling up next to Lord’s cricket ground, the venue is ideal for tourists and, in season, for those wanting a stop off point around watching a match. It’s easy to access, spacious and has an excellent, reasonably priced menu to recommend it.

The food has a quality that cynics among us would expect to only come with a much higher price tag. Each dish can legitimately be described as mouthwatering, and comes immaculately presented.

Such high standards are a sign of dedication on behalf of the staff to offer the full experience of dining out. A new manager has recently been drafted in from a Michelin style kitchen, and this shows in the attention to detail. This is no mere make do post-match and in season only option, indeed many of the clientele are clearly from the surrounding area, with a couple of groups chatting casually round the bar and a number of couples eating at the tables.

The menu is updated regularly, with a specialized Match of the Day menu, and a Sunday menu covering roasts as well as the week day options.

There is a great range of starters including soup of the day, smoked salmon and leek fish cakes and an incredible goats’ cheese salad with green beans, celery, radish, poached pear, and sensational caramelized walnuts.

The mains all sit around or just below the £10 mark and really are remarkable value for money with no half way measures. Built around a traditional focus, choices include fish and chips, the Lord’s Tavern burger, a substantial Ploughman’s and vegetarian pasta. There is a succulent banger and mash dish, comprising Gloucester Old Spot sausages and creamy mashed potato topped with grilled apples, red onions and sage gravy.

Special of the day was a pan fried sea bream cooked to light and crisp perfection.

Sides include a generous helping of steamed vegetables, a range of salads and the traditional options of chips, onion rings and coleslaw.

The desert menu also doesn’t disappoint. There are ice creams, sorbets and a cheese board. On as a special is a delicious hot chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream on. And the dark chocolate and hazelnut torte with white chocolate mousse and confit orange would be reason enough alone to order a meal there.

There is a concise and satisfying wine list, with the house wines full bodied and offering something slightly above the sharp and fruity fallback you might expect. There are also plans to introduce an in house cocktail menu later in the autumn.
