All In London Review

Cheap, a bit smelly, but fun!

One of London’s popular gay nights out, Ghetto attracts a young crowd, mainly from late teens to mid twenties. Thursdays and Saturdays are the busiest nights with a mixture of indie and cheesy pop on Misshapes and Wig Out respectively. On Friday nights Ghetto plays host to ‘Cock’ which used to be known rather notoriously as the rent boy night, however it’s a far more commercially acceptable event now playing pop and electro; both Will Young and Sir Ian McKellen have been seen here, the former in rather an inebriated state, I might add.

Drinks are cheap but not particularly nice, unless you’re a fan of Red Stripe. The floor gets sticky, the toilets are a hell hole, the walls and ceiling appear to sweat and the place quite frankly smells, but I’d be hard pushed to find a friendlier, more easy going environment in London. The cool ‘alternative’ kids do show up here with their eyeliner and skinny jeans, and there’s the odd hugely irritating stereotypical group of straight guys pathetically attempting to act cool in a gay club, but on the whole there is a lack of pretence and attitude which is endearing, and which makes nights here enjoyable.

Entrance fees are always low and student concessions are available, more reasons why Ghetto is so popular with young student types. Possibly due to a decreasing audience, the club managers have recently shaken up their calendar, replacing the once seminal electro night Nag Nag Nag with new venture Calling All Tribes and Sunday night’s Retox with soul and r’n’b party Pretty Young Things. However it could simply be that the kids have grown up.
