All In London Review

A City pub catering to City folk during the week

Review Image
It may be located in the heart of The City, stand behind one of the many identical facades of Leadenhall Market and have a clientele made up entirely of lunchtime and after work locals but can The New Moon really be as bland as all that? Somehow, the answer to that question is no. While all the signs point towards the fact that this pub just shouldn’t work, it does retain some character.

Visit on a lunchtime or after work and you’ll be swallowed up by the City suits who monopolise the space both inside and out. And with an interior that is filled with high tables, cream walls, plenty of attractive wood and not much else, outside is definitely the place to be. And while that may sound like a slight on the interior, it’s not. It’s just that with the historical, cobbled market outside you’d be a fool not to enjoy the al fresco experience.

Like many pubs in The City, The New Moon closes for the weekend. Its array of Greene King beers include Abbot Ale and Old Speckled Hen as well as a regular guest ales. Peculiarly, the pub also keeps a short cocktail list, which reads; Cosmopolitan, Bloody Mary, Mojito. And while we couldn’t imagine sipping on a chilled Cosmo on a Thursday night in The New Moon, there are evidently some who can. Food consists of some Italian classics along with the standard pub fare that is hard to get wrong – which means sausage and chips, fish and chips and scampi… and chips.

Owing to its Leadenhall Market location, tourists might be inspired to visit The New Moon, but for most the fine ales and cobbled drinking area aren’t enough to entice them this deep into The City.
