East India Club is a private club with a rather formal theme where members can enjoy the privileges of sipping port and smoking some of the finest cigars in the drawing room. There is a library full of leather bound books as well as the pleasure of dining at their exquisite restaurant. Some members are offered lifetime membership upon leaving boarding school and others gain membership from being connected in the more affluent parts of society.

I was invited to an event held there. I found the staff welcoming, curtious and polite, even when asking not to user phone. Highly recommended as a refuge from the hurly burly of London .

Smoking is now banned (even in the still named Smoking Room) which overlooks the square. The restaurant is very good and well priced with an excellent cellar. No one is offered lifetime membership just becasue they went to a certain school (there is an excellent young Members scheme linked to education but you still pay) and you certainly do not have to be in the most affluent parts of society.
