Relaxed post-work cocktails
A friend suggested 22 Below for a post-work drink on a Friday and had I not been led there by someone in the know I am confident I wouldn’t have found it. Located on Great Marlborough Street, a staircase to the side of a café leads down to this small space which according to the website has been modelled on the style of New York speakeasies, a vibe I did not pick up on in the slightest from the agreeable red walls and furniture.
Happy hour from 5 till 7 meant cocktails for only £4.50; however the only one that jumped off the page was the Pink Panther, a delicious raspberry and vodka concoction in a martini glass. After a couple of these I moved on to the rest of the menu and opted for the Thai Sorbet, which is now officially my favourite drink. Bacardi, lemongrass, Thai mint, coconut, vanilla sugar and crushed ice materialised in a long, long glass which kept me quiet for about 15 minutes.
As it started to get busier we pondered how popular this bar could be, as there is barely the capacity for 100 people. Its discreet entrance is perfect for its size as it’s unlikely to be spotted by enough people to get overcrowded, however the tasty cocktails, happy hour and a delectable food menu (grilled halloumi and peppers stuffed with feta cheese) are sure to pull in a sizeable clientele. There is even a comedy night on a Tuesday and the obligatory DJ’s at the weekend.
Great for relaxed drinks after work and a bite to eat.
