All In London Review

The thinking clubber’s venue

Corsica Studios is a non-profit arts organisation that helps to fund exhibitions, performances, film screenings and other ventures. Based under the arches, a few minutes away from Elephant & Castle tube station, they also play host to some excellent club nights.

I had a good feeling about Corsica Studios even before I arrived. A lesser known club but with a good reputation, surely the more diehard clubbers would be here rather than the posers that can be found at some of the superclubs.

And I was right. As we sauntered past the (unusually friendly) bouncers, no one was there to do the obligatory search, which can at times feel patronising and intimidating, particularly when at times they will handle you more roughly than a butcher handles a squawking turkey.

Comprising two rooms, a large patio for smokers, and a cheap bar (£3 for a spirit and mixer) the venue is big enough for you to get lost in should you want to, but just the right size to get a packed yet not unbearably crowded dancefloor.

I’ve been to far too many places in London masquerading as music venues which are little more than pulling joints where the guys show off in shades, and the girls attempt to sway from side to side in wobbly heels. Despite being a fan of high heels myself, ( I am a petite person) I’ve never understood the logic of wearing 6 inch stilettos to a nightclub, unless all you intend to do is stand in the middle of the dancefloor with a vodka tonic. There was none of this nonsense here.

The crowd were friendly, the type of people that will tap you on the shoulder to alert you they’re coming past rather than rudely shove into you, that will smile at you if they see you are enjoying yourself, and will engage you in friendly, flattering chat. Many of them were good dancers, paying attention to every song, just as it should be.

One for those passionate about their music, and their dancing.
