Gordon's Wine Bar is an institution in London's drinking circles with the speciality being fortified wines. Served from wooden casks behind the bar, this gives it a slightly eccentric feel. They also serve a variety of English dishes. Outside seating is provided on the terrace.

All In London Review

One of those places you really have to go to...

Well, they say that this is the oldest wine bar in London. And by the décor I’d agree. But it is a bit of an institution. Just near Embankment station on Villiers Street you go down suitably dark and narrow steps and straight onto the bar – with the usual chalk boards showing special offers and bin ends and racks of wine. Then you have to fight your way around the various nooks and crevices that are usually heaving with people.

Last time I went, we popped in towards the end of the evening and it was a warm one. So we took our bottle out into the open air bit (Watergate Walk) which is pretty large with lots of parasol covered tables which was almost as busy as inside. Standing room only so we had to perch our wine on someone else’s table – what’s the etiquette for that? And while you could almost see into the lovely Victoria gardens, the view is a bit restricted.

The style is rather informal – so you feel a bit silly if you are en route to somewhere a bit posh and are dressed up. The night we were there, there were some decidedly odd characters near us in the open air area – although we donated the remainder of our bottle to one of them as we left and were politely thanked.

When I returned recently for a late drink, I was surprised to find that it closed at 11pm - in these enlightened times – fancy! So, it’s one of those places that you really have to go to, as it is so well known, but make sure you get there early.

It's nearly time... for sexy time...

Thought to be London’s oldest wine bar, Gordon’s is a real slice of history. In its present form since 1890, the Villiers Street wine bar is among the most impressive venues in the city. You can sit above ground but true romantics must head for the vaults. It is stunning.

Lovely, genuine-feeling place that has bags of character and atmosphere and some really friendly staff. The outside area is a bonus in such an apparently busy, central location... just the job for a sunny evening after work.

Been going to Gordon's Wine Bar since for more years than I care to remember. You descend via steep steps from Villiers St into a cave-like gloom which is always teeming with people. It's rumoured not to have been decorated since 1940 and I believe it. The wine is good but if you need to sit down in comfort, you might be disappointed. A place for Londoners and very convenient for Charing X.

This is such a unique little place tucked away on the busy Villiers St.. I went once before the smoking ban and because of it's small spaces and the fact that it was completely packed full, it was awful for me as a non-smoker. However, I've been back since and think its fabulous - really one of a kind. Just try and have an idea of what you want before you get to the bar and don't (as I did first time around) ask for "a glass of red"! There are hundreds of types to choose from... a wine buff's heaven! Having said that it is still laid back and unstuffy enough for us uneducated ones to not feel uncomfortable.
