All In London Review
Gastro by day, sporty by weekend, party-pub by night - The Old Dairy is a bit of an all-rounder
Located between Crouch End and Finsbury Park, The Old Dairy is an ode to the gastro pubs of old. Serving hot sausage rolls and Scotch Eggs as gourmet snacks, Bloody Mary’s talked about as if they’re some future-drink from another planet and offering mum and baby sessions during the week as if that’s normal or something. Sure, take them to the cinema, but to the pub? And during the day? Thankfully, that’s not all the entertainment at The Old Dairy. Sporting events are shown on big screens, the Not Just An Udder Quiz teases brains weekly; there are regular DJs and even life drawing classes.
The Old Dairy is so big that it could probably rent out five areas to groups of twenty and still have more people packed into the rest of the rooms than most pubs have in total. Its mix of large and small rooms come in handy if you’re not up for the more rambunctious action occurring in the main bar. Chat away in the comfort of a separate space, you’re at The Old Dairy and you’re 30+ (maybe), you deserve to relax.
Beer is unsurprisingly skewed towards the ale drinker. The pub serves multiple ales on rotation with this occasion throwing up the excellent Portobello American Pale Ale. Along with the fancier suds there are also the usual lagers.
On top of all that entertainment mentioned earlier, The Old Dairy can also boast about its food. Veal and foie gras burgers, Moroccan spiced lamb rumps and char grilled swordfish really put the capital ‘G’ in gastro. Main meals range from between £11.00 and £17.00 and there is a good selection of starters and mains too.
The Old Dairy feels like more of an all day Sunday type of pub than a Friday-nighter. Order food, take a paper and watch some sport, now that sounds like an appropriate use of the pub.
