All In London Review

A rough and ready Peckham music pub with a great steam punk theme

Review Image
‘What. Is. This.’ were the words we used to greet the Montague Arms on our first visit to the reopened New Cross pub and we can imagine that there are others that will have thought along the same lines. Having been empty and out of service for a long while, the reemergence of a lively alternative pub has saved the area from having to face the prospect of a set of luxury flats or a new mini-supermarket in its stead. Head to the Montague Arms now if you like the sound of live bands – punk, art-rock, rockabilly and more – good beer and yet more music in the from of DJ nights. Oh, and there’s a steam punk theme running through it too.

One look inside this pub and you’re charmed. Is it rough around the edges? Yes, but the likes of the jagged plastered ceiling, spherical globe tables, assorted steam punk attractions and an altogether more creepy collection of taxidermy than your average pub hit the right spot. Located close to the shadow cast by Goldsmiths Art College, the Montague gives the area another alternative to the Amersham Arms, which can only be a good thing.

The Montague serves a variety of pies from Pie Minister and hosts a good range of beer on tap, including Lagunitas, Meantime and Affligem, Having established that ‘what this is’ is a pub that has it all going on, we’ll be back for more. More rockabilly. More all-vinyl hip-hop. More pub quizzing. More steam punk.

If you're looking for something abit bizarre or unusual, then this is your pub. Full of zebra heads, deer heads on the wall, with cobwebs, old ship parts and an old jeep full of family board games, this place resembles a scene from the film Jumanji.
The only downside is that it does not have a beer garden so it's not the best place for hot summer days. Apart from this, they have an excellent choice of ales and fruit beers and the staff are very friendly. Sunday roast dinners must be booked in advance and are excellent quality and value for money.
