All In London Review
A fun, contemporary pub for a neighbourhood whose nightlife is on the rise
If Urban Outfitters did pubs then they might end up a bit like Jam Circus. As is the norm for the Antic Group (the company that seems to have been opening a new London pub every other week for the past few years) there’s quite the kook going on here, which in our humble opinion is a whole lot better than just moving in, distressing the walls and throwing up a few old blackboards to make a look. Flower power meets 70’s chintz in this neighbourhood pub on the edge of Brockley with a variety of rooms boasting a variety of themes.
Billing themselves as a ‘community pub’, Jam Circus has turned a pair of old, stale store fronts into a colourful new pub. Inside, the place is split into various divisions. There is the bar and dining area, the retro lounge and the charming – and extremely seedy - Red Room at the back.
DJ’s and live music provide the entertainment along with the Tuesday Quiz Night and if you want to eat there is a simple food menu (roasts on Sundays). We try the chicken and bacon pot pie which gets our approval and along with that there is sausage and mash, fish and chips and a small, slightly more original range of light bites.
As with most Antic pubs, Jam Circus holds a good range of beer. We found local brews from Brixton and Brockley Brewery behind the bar, along with stalwarts of the craft game like Lagunitas and Meantime. A good addition to Brockley, Jam Circus is worth including in any pub-crawl in this area south of the river.
