All In London Review

This Forest Hill pub is all about big name stand-up comedy and music

Review Image
It was esteemed comedian Al Murray who said of The Hob ‘It’s so much more than just a great pub’. And as we are talked through the weekly events lineup we begin to get it – the Hob is more than just a pub, he wasn’t just saying it. There is stand-up comedy on Saturdays, up-and-coming comics on Mondays, celebrity quiz night on Thursdays and live music on Fridays. And while quantity doesn’t always mean quality the pub has a sterling reputation when it comes to live music and comedy.

Located across the road from Forest Gate station, the pub is spread over two floors. The Upstairs room hosts comedy, film and private functions with the livelier main room downstairs left to host the rest. The quality of the comedy is one of the pub’s main attractions, regularly voted among the capital’s best pubs for stand-up and has featured some stellar names. The bar itself isn’t so special – it offers a standard selection of wines and spirits along with the likes of Amstel, Doom Bar and Adnams on draught.

Done up in classic style – wood everywhere, long bar, high tables and an array of framed pictures over the walls - the pub is full of regulars. You get the feeling that it might take a few visits before you can get comfortable. If you’re a local then keep at it but for one-off visits it’s all about checking the lineup and picking the right night.
