All In London Review

Dark, intimate, great sound

For every commercial super club with extortionate prices, there are thankfully places like Plastic People sitting firmly on the opposite end of the spectrum. Dark, intimate, with a great sound system and courteous clubbers, Plastic People is consistently one of London’s best clubbing experiences.

As well as hosting various regular nights like Lost and Warm, on the odd Sunday they have a ‘Who’s In Town’ night where they nab a hot DJ who happens to be in London that weekend playing elsewhere, at the last minute. In the past they’ve managed to secure techno pioneer Derrick May.

The lack of aggressive security once again belies the fact that people are here to dance and enjoy themselves, and should be allowed to do so. The irony is that the more relaxed the security, the less fights, staggering around and falling over seems to happen inside. Go to Fabric for example, and you’re almost certain to see a fight break out at some point.

Not so here, where the vibe is a peaceful one, and despite its tiny size (it fits around 300 people) there is ample room to dance. Clubbers here are considerate, and at a risk of sounding like an old fogey this is something that's often lacking.

The dancefloor itself is almost completely dark, so you can’t really see what that girl dancing next to you is wearing; the DJ booth contains the only light and is at ground level, making the DJ part of the crowd.

Drinks are cheaper than average here too, a spirit and mixer is £3, and entry fees are usually around £8, making this an even sweeter experience when you realise you’re spending very little and getting so much in return.
