A hang out for night owls

It never ceases to amaze how few venues have late opening licences in the capital, in comparison to our European counterparts. The Bar on Hanway Street always comes in handy for those times when you know you really should be going home, but just don’t want to.

Being tucked away just behind Oxford Street ensures that the throngs that populate busy areas like neighbouring Soho never quite manage to make it in here. Despite this being one of the smallest bars in the vicinity there are usually seats available, even at the weekends. Opening till 3am during the week as well as on Fridays and Saturdays make this perfect for night owls.

The music policy is usually 60s and 70s soul, doo-wop and funk, and there is a small area for dancing in front of the DJ booth. Don’t smack your head in the floor to ceiling mirror thinking it’s another room however, it’s merely there to give the impression of extra space.

Drinks are reasonably priced and staff are friendly, don’t expect glamour (seats are essentially metal barrels with cushions on them), but it’s a relaxed place to hang out till the early hours. Intimate enough for couples, and enough fun to be had by groups of friends.

Love going to The Bar. When you're out with a group and they think there's nowhere else you can try, take them here.

Late night, stomping rock and roll and soul bar on the first floor of a Hanway Street corridor. Hard to find but worth the effort!
