All In London Review

It might take a return journey to take in everything on offer

A Stoke Newington beer hall focusing unsurprisingly on what it serves rather than how it looks, with what it serves coming all the way from the realms of the unusual...

Updated from past dreariness, the addition of swanky chandeliers, ruby red pillars and arty wall hangings give the required pizzaz that the space needed to soothe its hollowness. Exposed brickwork warms it up with the help of the open kitchen and chunky wooden tables pound down on the floorboards.

Intimate it’s not, the blocky shape leaves nowhere unexposed so it’s a better place for the beer sampling evenings that the amount of taps call for, over a beer-y date night. The rule seems to be that the further you go from Dalston towards Stoke Newington, the more mature the clientele you’ll find and it’s true of the Jolly Butchers and its band of beer appreciators.

There are Belgian beers like Palm, Brugse Zot and Kriek on draught along with a huge list of ales that seem to change with the weather and there’s even the respect for cider that’s generally missing from pubs like this. Wye’s Farmhouse and Weston’s among more independent surprises. Use the selection to wash down bratwurst, fish and chips (triple cooked in goose fat) and burgers spruced up with pancetta and such things but skip dessert for another beer instead. It might take a return journey to take in everything on offer but its charm shouldn’t make that too difficult.

Who fancies a pint of Willie's Old Groyne?

This Stoke Newington pub has quietly been impressing with its range of craft ale and Belgian beers for a few years now. The Jolly Butchers excels with its Sunday roasts and yet even they are eclipsed by some of its beers. Try: Brew Dog Punk IPA.
