All In London Review

The Bell

The City isn’t known for its pubs so when you find one that stands out from the crowd it makes the discovery all the sweeter. Theatre, vinyl-only nights and a giant bear head mounted on the wall? The Bell has all that and more.

Located on Middlesex Street just around the corner from the old Petticoat Lane Market, in its own words, the Bell is ‘more than just a City pub’. Spacious and Victorian, a swinging chandelier dangles above the large bar and a selection of battered sofas provides comfortable seating. You can also find a games room in the basement and spare rooms on the first floor, which can be hired out for various private events and, oh yes, theatre.

The Bell hosts plays from a theatre company affiliated with the pub and other entertainment includes regular DJs and occasional live performances. While all this may not be breaking any boundaries were it a little further east, its location on the edge of The City means that those after-workers who want more than wine bars and expense accounts have a soulful boozer that they can call their own.

There is a good selection of bar snacks (try the spicy sausages) and revolving cask ales alongside the likes of Red Stripe and Peroni on draught. Those who appreciate the history that London pubs like these come with, will be interested to know that The Bell is on the Ripper trail and some still say that the building is haunted to this day.

So, a combination of murderous history, theatre, music and real ale and in the heart of The Square Mile – how could you not pay The Bell a visit?

This isn't the first time I've been to The Bell so I'm fast running out of superlatives for this venue! The atmosphere is always buzzing, the service is quick, accurate and friends... and it's full of the sort of people I was to mingle with. Nice place....

Whoever I take to this pub ALWAYS absolutely loves it. "It's a cool bar near Aldgate" sounds frightening. It's cool, but in a good way. It's got a retro feel and is really comfortable. The staff are nice and the table football enthusiasts all seem very civilised so maybe that's why the a

Love the place been coming here for the last year or so and its much improved on what it used to be. Havent tried the food but i hear its pretty good, lunches there seem pretty busy so sure it is. Been to a couple of good Music evenings with live bands, which were fun.
Always found the staff to be friendly and they know thier drinks! Has a real mix of customers from suits to locals and quite a trendy crowd on friday evenings. wish it was open on saturdays so i wouldnt have to put up with the west end crowds that now ruin the bars round brick lane at the weekends....!

Wish I could give 0 out of 10.
Avoid this pub ... I had a terrible experience. I left my card behind the bar and, when I came to pay, found that the staff had mistakenly charged extra drinks to my card. This isn't a huge problem in itself, but when I queried the charge the staff at first tried to make excuses and then said "well, you've signed now". Trying to resolve the issue resulted in the bar manager becoming personally abusive.
There were no redemptive qualities.
