All In London Review

Peak behind the curtain in Vogue Fabrics and you'll find much more going on than just the usual Dalston basement bar antics

Drag, transgender performance art, poetry, disco; it’s safe to say that Vogue Fabrics is riling against any attempts to homogenise Dalston’s nightlife. An underground club (aren’t they all) the venue has a roster of club nights and events as diverse as the crowd who fill it. If you’re after a club with a little more to it than a DJ standing behind some decks then get wrapped up in Vogue Fabrics.

Located on Stoke Newington Road, the venue is everything you’d expect a Dalston basement club to look like. Dark, dingy and sporting (on this occasion) a three-foot penis drawn on a toilet wall. The toilet art aside, the space is simple. Laid out for dancing – so no seating – the venue is all bare floor space with a makeshift stage at one end from which all manner of entertainment is generated. Vogue Fabrics hosts alt-fashion parties, spoken word, drag, literary talks, cabaret and DJ’s who play anything from 80s girl bands to electro. The ramshackle back bar serves up beers by the can and shots in plastic glasses, which is all part of the Dalston charm. Expect to pay on the door and don’t arrive too early or you’ll be faced with an empty club drained of its post-midnight mystique. Most definitely a club for when you’re done with the – many! - surrounding bars.
