Scrumptious food and good wine
Calling it a café is a bit of a misnomer, as there is a full menu and the wine comes courtesy of Chix and Buck, two expert wine importers. Chix has based herself here to assist with matching, and the duo also host regular wine tasting sessions. The venue even boasts an Enomatic dispenser so that wines can be kept fresh to be sold by the glass. Looking around it certainly seems this is a popular spot for wine-loving couples.
The menu has steak, risotto, pasta and other simple favourites (mains are around £11 - £15). We tuck into the deep fried prawns in filo pastry which are a bit M&S party box, but the homemade chicken liver pate is exquisite. We also greedily try the “mixed assiette” of cheeses and cured meats, and another with herby falafels, samosas, spring rolls and hummus, which while not being overly adventurous are excellent for snacking with booze.
A fruity Pinot Noir is suggested to go with a lamb steak, and a fresh, bold Trebbiano for a salmon, smoked haddock and dill fishcake. The grilled lamb is terrific, the juicy meat practically melts in the mouth, redolent of chargrilled smokiness and served with roast vegetables seasoned with rosemary. The fishcake is served on a heap of wilted spinach, cream and horseradish; a rich yet fiery combo that really works. The fruity red wine with lamb, and the crisp white with creamy sauce and fish prove to be excellent pairings too. Scrumptious food and good wine make this a great little spot.
