Pop-up nightclub and gallery set to stay for another year

It’s becoming a classic East End story: a disused space is converted into a pop-up gallery and club space by an enterprising, arty group of people. In the case of the Red Gallery, when the business set to take over the building fell through (a branch of the Art‘otel chain of hotels) the pop-up remained for an extended period. The Red Project, the organisation behind the Red Gallery whose aim is to regenerate empty buildings affected by the recession, has signed a lease on the building for the coming year, therefore we can expect more cultural happenings and DJ sets in 2011 - live gigs, skateboard displays and London’s first late night food market are planned, with a series of studios to be created for local artists. The rooms on the ground floor of this former language school are where the exhibitions take place, one of which features its own bar; meanwhile the basement is where the night time shenanigans occur, and previous names have included Ellen Allien, Secretsundaze, Theo Parrish and Anja Schneider, with label showcases from Hybrid Life and Ostgut Ton to name just a few. It’s a rough-round-the-edges warehouse type of space, with dim lighting and next to no air conditioning, so expect to get sweaty and let loose on the dancefloor, the queues can get a bit messy too. On the plus side as it’s actually a proper venue and not just a car park that hosts events, the toilets are in fairly good nick. Expect a trendy crowd to turn up.
