All In London Review
Apothecary Bar, excellent. Club... not as great.
A self-styled house of sin, this building in Angel was once a Victorian Music Hall. Spread over three floors, the size of the place is one thing that wasn’t exaggerated. We enter to a club night in the ground floor music hall bar and since we’re early enough there is no cover charge; arrive later and you won’t be so lucky. This ground floor ‘music hall’ is a standard bar. We take up residence at a table in the bay window and wait for the music to get louder – it doesn’t. Sadly, we haven’t booked a spot in the upstairs apothecary bar and since walk-ins were done for the night there was no hope. Fortunately, we’ve been before and having ‘enjoyed’ both experiences I can safely say that the mystique of the floors above must be keeping House of Wolf afloat. Compared to the ground floor, the experimental bar above is another world. The drinks – painstakingly put together and presented – are magnificent. Book if you can.
An alternative view of the larger ground floor bar is that it is best visited during the week when the Angel nightlife crowd is safely tucked up at home. The line-up of events certainly backs up this theory, with eclectic activities ranging from life drawing to pop-up supper clubs available to the public. As a club or even just a place to go and dance, House of Wolf is disappointing but that only serves to make a trip up to the Apothecary Bar even more rewarding. We won’t spoil the fun by detailing the weird and wonderful range of drinks but suffice to say, you will be impressed.
