All In London Review

Cheap negronis, interesting burger combinations but why all the writing on the walls?

Located down the quieter end of Mare Street, The Advisory is looking to liven things up among the chicken shops and pizza takeaways. The area opposite Well Street has been in need of sustained nightlife offerings ever since The London Fields pub opened up to join The Dolphin in pulling people away from Broadway Market. Now it seems those two stalwarts have found a new friend.

Café, bar, restaurant; The Advisory is a little bit of everything. The bare plastered off-white walls, swinging bulbs and general unaffected look of the place is charming enough but it could have done without plastering black lettered ‘advice’ on the walls. For example, the wall really wasn’t in need of having ‘Ketchup must be applied to fries’ splashed across it. If I want to splash Ketchup across my fries, I will. If I don’t, I won’t.

Space is tight and it fills up fast in the evenings. For the most part the bar is filled with tables but there is some limited standing room. Food is a draw and The Advisory’s speciality is its burgers. The bacon, mushroom and onion burger that we sampled was something different and the only negative was that we didn’t get try the shrimp po' boy. Burgers are reasonable value at £7.50 each and the brunch menu of blueberry pancakes, eggs benedict and beigels is competitive. However, the drinks are where you’ll notice the price difference for the area. For £6 you can choose a cocktail from a list that includes whisky sour, Negroni and bourbon espresso. The beers aren’t quite as cheap but then it’s Kernel, Camden and Crate breweries you’re getting rather than Fosters, Kronenbourg and Carlsberg.

The Advisory is a lively place, ripe for weekend brunch meetings and boozy burger and cocktail nights on a – relatively - tight budget.
