Simple boozer amidst the hubbub of Curtain Road
Amidst the hubbub of Curtain Rd sits The Barley Mo, a rough-round-the-edges boozer that fills up with hipsters at the weekends due to its prime E1 location.
It’s tiny, cramped and very very loud downstairs thanks to bellowing music of a rock persuasion and the jolly chatter of the punters. A jukebox sits tentatively against the wall and people cram into every last bit of space, anticipating a free seat. Alternatively many opt to buy their drinks in plastic cups so they can stand outside.
Luckily, few people seem to notice there is a quieter upstairs room (blast, I’ve given it away) where only one of the tables is occupied. Mellower music is played creating a curious background cacophony when blended with the sounds leaking from downstairs, however it is possible to converse here, while observing the goings on below from the large windows. Bright red walls and tatty wooden furniture characterize this welcoming room.
There is a curious mix of older regulars stopping in for a pint and revellers having a few drinks before heading off elsewhere into the Shoreditch night. If you’re not in the mood for bouncers or posturing this simple watering-hole is just the ticket.
