I had the very unpleasant experience of visiting this bureu yesterday. The guy in the place was rude, clearly incompetent and had no concept of customer service. I walked into the money exchange wanting to change a US$500 travellers cheque to pounds in order to purchase a camera in a shop next door. As soon as I handed the guy the cheque and my passport, he looks at both documents, rubs the cheque and proceeds to call it counterfeit. He looked at me like I had no business having such a cheque, tells me he has the wuthority to hold on to my passport but in his great benevolence he won't and that he will hold on to the cheque because it is clearly counterfeit and I can come back in about 30 minutes when his head office might/might not have done the necessary checks. This respnse was rather disturbing as I changed a similar cheque in another bureau on the same street 2 weeks ago without any problem. Upon asking several questions as to whether he verified the authenticity of the cheque with American Express by calling the necessary number, he responded by saying if the cheque is fake, it will deducted from his salary and as such he has to do the necessary checks with his HEAD OFFICE, not American Express. Once I told him I was with an Embassy and the cheques had been legitimately given to me through them, his demeanor changed and he proceeded to call the AMEX number as i said. As it turned out, the cheque was indeed VALID. He then proceeded to say that he will change the cheque, but will require my telephone number, just in case something happened. Imagine this, despite AMEX's validation. I told him, given his attitude and despite AMEX's validation, I'd rather do business elsewhere. Further, I let him know that it was customary to write the passport details of the person buying the sterling, as this might be a better tracking tool, more effective than a cell number. In conclusion I went to another bureau, staffed by competent people and got my money without a glitch
