I've lived around the corner and have been a regular - if intermittent customer for 11 years. And in all that time, there hasn't been one occasion when the lovely family running the shop haven't been able to help with the most obscure requests. Consistently friendly, cheerful and helpful. Thank y

Absolutely fantastic. The staff are incredibly helpful and you feel like you've known them for years. The couple, Karen and Trevor, are exactly what you would be looking for from this kind of establishment. Class oozes from every pore of this shop; as does understanding. I entered feeling overwhelmed and left feeling knowledgable and respected. I cannot give these people enough praise. I have dealt with a great many hardware stores, but this stands head and shoulders above all others. Thank you.

This is a charming gem of a place to visit, there's a real sense of history as you go through the front door. Situated right next door to Cartwright gardens you could almost feel like you've just stepped into the classic film Oliver. Wooden floors and rustic smell, the place hasn't actually changed much for over 30 years.(The original store was established as Povey Fry back in the 1800's). This is a family business, handed down through the generations. I know the current owner and company director Trevor and his father Thomas who ran the place before him. Thomas Lowne was a very well known celebrity, a legend in the local community. This is the type of place you could go to buy one screw rather than a pack of a hundred you don't actually need. That real personal touch you just don't find in those big multinational money grabbing conglomerates. This place deserves your patronage. You'll never see a SALE sign on the window - it's always been buy one, get another one for exactly the same price as the first, no nonesense ! Only place I know locally that has a really good selection of plants and a Dulux mixing machine to get whatever colour you require. If you've ever seen Arkwright's "Open All Hours" and wondered if places like that still exist ? Well this is it !
