A CAUTIONARY TALE - I purchased doors for the front and back of my new property from Select a Door who also supplied fitters for both. The large Victorian style door was a special order so the back door was fitted first. The back door fitter completed the job but failed to tidy up afterwards and I cleared the door wrappings that were strewn over the garden.
The front door was paid for and a fitting date set however I was rung later to say a fitter was not available. As I was about to go into hospital to have a baby and needed the property to be secured as agreed a fitter was sent.
This time the fitter managed to fit the glass panes wrong with one textured side on the inside and the other on the outside - as it remains to this day. The fitter complained that it was not his job when part of the door surround had to be taken off to fit the door and instead of scoring it prised it off cracking the paint and exposing the sunken screw heads.
Move on five years and this Christmas Eve the front door lock knob from the stock lock they supplied sheared off in my hand on my way out of the house leaving me and two young children locked inside the house. Thankfully not in an emergency but we were effectively stuck inside until we could get someone to come over and open the door from the outside. No one answered the Select a Door phone that afternoon and not until after New Year, no emergency ansaphone number supplied.
I have now bought a new Yale lock with 10 year guarantee from B&Q.
