All In London Review

Gives pies the Shoreditch treatment

Review Image
Hoxton Pastry Union is located in what used to be The Foundry, a bar and arts venue once patronised by Gavin Turk. With cheap(ish) drinks, shabby décor and graffiti emblazoned on the walls itcharacterised the boho-turned-fauxho vibe of Shoreditch in the decade it was open. Once it closed there were plans to turn it into an 18 storey luxury hotel owned by Park Plaza, to the outcry of locals who saw it as yet another tolling of the area’s death knell. Plans have since stalled, so for the time being the ground floor is occupied bythis pie restaurant (surrounded by flats only investment bankers can afford, naturally), which despite its tagline of “we’re not here to make pies cool” couldn’t be more Shoreditch if it tried.

The missmatched, distressed furniture, trendy staff, and part caff part industrial warehouse chic screams East London, while also looking like the sort of place you find on every high street. But we can’t hold this against them as the pies are pretty good. Unfortunately the ‘HPU’ pie isn’t available so we don’t get to try their signature, but we like the Bourguignon, with chunks of beef and carrot, along with a healthy portion of mash and liquor. The fish pie is great, with chunks of salmon flecked with dill in a soft, lightly crisped pastry and chunky chips. Both are just a fiver.

Aside from the pastry there’sa breakfast menu and booze, for this is no humble pie shop but a restaurant proper. Nerdy blogs are sprouting up ranking pies according to the hue and texture of the pastry, the air to filling ratio and the tenderness of the crust.Could the pie soon become as fashionable as the burger?
