All In London Review

If you're into cycling and the cafe culture that goes with it then you'll enjoy the Rapha Cycling Club experience

Review Image
Rapha; you either view the cycling brand as offering reassuringly expensive, well-designed clothing or you see a poser’s brand that gives you style over substance and charges you insane prices for the pleasure. We’re not going to choose sides here - we can see elements of truth in both arguments – we’re just here to talk about Rapha Cycling Club, the London café, shop and meeting spot.

Located on Brewer Street in a sizeable spot just off Piccadilly Circus, the space is as smart as you would expect from Rapha. One half is filled with bib shorts, jerseys, jackets, jeans and a glorious vintage Citroen van and the other is a café. A long bar serves good (very good) coffee, cakes and a small range of hot dishes and there is plenty of seating at an array of tables decorated with Rapha branded cycling memorabilia – we had our flat white and chocolate brownie on a glass table with a signed Bradley Wiggins jersey beneath it. Along with the stylish branding at every turn, touches like these bring a personality to the space that makes it more than a corporate coffee spot. There are also flat screen TVs, which show both live and classic bike racing. This is a central London cycling meeting point – the live races, covetable equipment and plentiful coffee and pastries make sure of that. But those who don’t much like the ad-man smoothness of Rapha won’t find the menu here changes their opinion. Eggs, granola and flapjacks are described with cringe worthy consequence in terms of both their constituent parts and their benefits to the inevitable ride that you’re (surely) about to embark on. Flapjacks? Good for a mid-ride snack? Who’d have thought…

If you like cycling and enjoy the café culture that goes with it then you’ll find Rapha Cycling Club to be a great pit stop for when you’re in the area. If the brand leaves you cold then the coffee and cakes are unlikely to swing your feelings towards the brand that splits. Although, we like it and we don’t even wear it…

Get on your bike to one of these cafes!

Rapha have the honour of kitting out the professional British cycling team – it was their outfits you saw Team GB’s cyclists wearing at the 2012 Games. They have branches all over the world, but this Soho store doubles as a clothing shop and a café serving pastas, risottos and breakfasts. They’ve also upped the ante by opening a membership club at £150 a year, but you’d need to get through a lot of free coffees to make up the cost.

You're either with Rapha or your against it. It's a bit of a Marmite brand. But since I'm a chump cyclist who likes nice clothes I'm obviously all for a cycling brand that doesn't make you look like Mr Motivator.

Yes it's expensive but the products are built to last. Plus it has a coffee shop in-store - TOO COOL. Great shop, great brand.
