Back feels wider and posture is improved

It’s a common source of confusion, the difference between an osteopath and a chiropractor. Chiropractors focus on the spine and the nerves that run within it, whereas osteopaths use massage and other techniques to redirect blood flow to the affected areas. Both do “adjustments”, or what we commonly know as back cracking, but using different methods.

BodyBright Chiropractic is located within the Highgate Health Centre, a purpose-built clinic in an 18th century mews in quaint Highgate Village. A podiatrist, an aromatherapist and an acupuncturist work from here, as well as chiropractor Emma Biddell, who tells us that roughly 50% of her patients come in with lower back pain, usually due to problems arising from posture, whether it’s from sitting at a desk or standing on their feet for extended periods of time.

A first session at BodyBright involves a routine examination that includes checking blood pressure, posture, and the alignment of the pelvis and shoulders. Reflexes are tested on the knees as well as flexibility (by lifting each leg slowly one at a time). I’m also asked about any exercise I do and what position I sleep in.

Several years ago I visited an osteopath to cure me of crippling back pain which meant I could barely walk first thing in the morning. Thinking I was injured for life, the osteopath assured me this was caused by my habit of sitting with my legs crossed underneath me all day, which was curving my spine. Durr! Thankfully a combination of adjustments and acupuncture made me feel like a new person, so to speak, and now the only problem I get is an irritating ache in my left shoulder and the left side of my neck if I have a particularly long day at my desk. Indeed, Emma soon finds that my neck and shoulder are tense and knotty. The treatment includes adjustments, stretching the neck, applying pressure and massaging the affected area. I can definitely feel the difference afterwards; my back feels wider and posture is improved, I almost feel taller a couple of inches taller.

For acute problems, which last a few weeks, three or four sessions are recommended. In the case of chronic problems which have been ongoing for years (such as mine), Emma recommends six to eight sessions. The first session of 45 minutes (plus examination), is £45, and subsequent sessions are £35 for 30 mins. Exercises to do at home are also advised.

Bodybright is open on Tuesdays and Fridays.
