About Epsom Downs Racecourse
Epsom Downs near Epsom in Surrey is most famous for its horse racing event, the Epsom Derby, which is one of the UK's premier thoroughbred horse races for three-year-old colts and fillies over 2.4km. The Epsom Oaks for three-year-old fillies and the Coronation Cup for all ages take place there too. The area is also used by ramblers, model aircraft flyers, golfers and cyclists. Epsom Downs Racecourse is the home of the Derby Festival, a two day horse racing event which first took place back in 1780. The Queen's Stand is a purpose built Conference Centre that offers a selection of suites (the capacities vary from 10 to 400 guests and there are also private boxes available). The new Grandstand opens in April 2009, with capacities of up to 800 people for events such as conferences and up to 600people for dinner dances. As well as free parking on site, there is an 18 hole golf course directly opposite the racecourse. The area is served by the Epsom Downs railway line as well as Tattenham Corner railway station (that’s where, on race days, Queen Elizabeth II alights from the Royal Train!).
