About Forty Hall Museum and Gardens:This museum boasts artworks, furniture, ceramics, glassware and local maps dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as post-Medieval crockery and cutlery. The building itself was constructed in 1629 for Sir Nicholas Rainton, former Mayor of London. After he died the home changed hands several times, until final owner Henry Ferryman Bowles, then MP for Enfield, sold it to the council in 1951, who then decided to turn it into a museum. Much of the permanent collections have objects that were excavated or based around the borough of Enfield, which are mostly household items such as wine glasses, porcelain vases and tea sets. The Grade I listed building and its gardens are currently closed for refurbishment, with planned restoration of the Hall and an improved space for exhibitions. The gardens cover 260 acres of land, with formal gardens surrounding the museum and a public park, farm and lake. Admission is free and the museum is open from Wednesday to Sunday, 11 am to 4 pm. Forty Hall is due to reopen in spring 2012.
