Handel House is a small museum dedicated to the exploration of the life and music of the great composer George Frideric Handel who lived here for 36 years, and where he wrote his most famous works, including Messiah, Zadok the Priest and the Fireworks Music. The elegantly refurbished interiors create the perfect setting for 18th century furniture, evoking the spirit of Handel’s age.
Handel himself lived, and indeed died, in 25 Brook Street; we also own 23 Brook Street, which is where Jimi Hendrix lived briefly in the late 1960s, and we have a small display of insightful photographs of the rock legend. Beyond Handel and Hendrix, we are keen to explore life in eighteenth century London, which was much more exciting and cosmopolitan than is commonly thought!
We have a regular programme of music events, including our weekly Thursday Live recital series featuring young and upcoming talent from all the major London music colleges. These events are mainly baroque music (solo singer, harpsichord, violin or music ensemble), but we do also have regular non-baroque slots, dedicated to everything from Mozart to jazz. We also encourage students and young professionals to come and rehearse in the very room in the house where Handel himself entertained, which has its own magnificent harpsichord.
We also have special drop-in activities and free admission for young visitors (up to age of 16) every Saturday afternoon. Our young visitors (16 and under) can take their pick from special “Handel This!” quiz trails, get crafty with our 18th century activity bags, or perhaps even try on a Georgian costume. We also have baroque musicians rehearsing live, which is an ideal opportunity to peek inside the harpsichord to see how it works.
