About Hatton Gardens - for Jewellery

Since 1870 Hatton Gardens has become internationally recognised as the premier location for Jewellery in London. The name Hatton Gardens was taken from Sir Christopher Hatton, born in 1540 and a favourite of Queen Elizabeth I. The Queen gave Hatton the land and Ely Place. The name of the area became known as Hatton Gardens.

Situated at 100 Hatton Garden is the London Diamond Centre- this is where the diamonds for the Hatton Gardens jewellers are fingerprinted. Nearby at Holborn Viaduct id the de Beers’ diamond merchants. John Matthey started a gold and platinum business here but expanded when a huge influx of diamonds entered London following the Kimberly diamond rush.

Nearly 300 businesses in Hatton Gardens are concerned with the manufacture and sale of jewellery- with more than fifty outlets making the area the largest cluster of jewellers in the UK. Every conceivable item of jewellery is on offer from wedding rings to tie pins with the worlds rich and famous among the many visitors to this exclusive area of London.

The façade of an old bluecoat school designed by Sir Christopher wren stands in Hatton Gardens. The world’s first machine gun was developed by Maxim at number 55 Hatton Gardens.
