About Jewish Museum, Camden
Located on Albert Street in Camden is a striking and handsome grade I listed building, the home to one of the two sites of the Jewish Museum. Built in 1840 and impeccably maintained the Jewish Museum moved here from its original home at Woburn House in 1995. Though small in stature the Jewish Museum Camden is home to a staggering amount of information and holds regular temporary exhibitions.
The Jewish Museum chronicles the story of the Jewish faith in England from the Norman Conquest in 1066 to present day. The museum is divided into three sections. The Judaica Gallery is built around the iconic Star of David and exhibits the Jewish rituals and their path through the centuries. There is an impressive display of Judaica- Jewish ceremonial Art. The largest of the permanent exhibits attempts to follow the Jewish faith through the turbulence of English history.
Among the many artefacts on display are a collection of Hanukkah lamps and rimmonim- the ornate silver caps which hold the Torah scrolls. One of the most remarkable items is a beautiful carved Venetian synagogue Ark. A small admission charge applies and there are volunteers available to answer visitors questions.
