Hi everyone,

I could be starting work in Surrey soon, Cobham to be exact, and have been told by the recruitment team to have a look at the surrounding areas in case I am asked to relocate (I'll be moving from Liverpool). I have had a little look around various property web sites but dont really have any idea what I'm looking for, where is nice, where isn't, etc..

The recruiters have said to look around South-West London as a lot of people commute to Cobham from there, but I'd prefer to drive if possible. So where would be a decent, affordable place to move to. I was looking at areas like Kingston-Upon-Thames, Croydon and Hounslow, but may be too far.

Any suggestions?

I'd say Croydon is definitely too far. The commute would be a nightmare.

Areas I'd suggest are Kingston, Surbiton, Epsom, Hampton Court and Walton-on-Thames. All also have mainline trains into central London should you want to go into town, too.

Depends very much on what you're after aswell... are you young, free and single looking for some lively bars/nightlife (then Kingston is perhaps best), or are you a family person and therefore are parks, schools and a nice neighbourhood more important, in which case Walton on Thames and Hersham are affordable and well-connected and perhaps better suited?

I'm not carefree and single and into bars, but I still would live in Kingston. It's got shopping and the river.

If you're working in Cobham then I'd look at Walton On Thames, Esher, Hersham, Weybridge. Very close to Cobham and all well connected to central London.

The drive from those places to Cobham is about 10-15 minutes on a good day, 30 minutes in traffic.

Esher is so boring... go for Walton-on -Thames. It used to be boring but I think there's slightly more to do there now.

Yeah kingston and surbinton could be great choices. You can get a house share for a good price - avoiding the excessive london rent prices but still be close enough to get into the city.

They've got a shopping centre, cinema, restaurants, pubs... it's all going on in Walton on Thames  Seriously though, there's been loads of investment over the last 5 years, so it's a great place to be at the moment. A nice feel about it and constantly new things opening and going on... even a Farmer's Market now!!

p.s. forgot to mention leisure centre, walks by the river and (and this is a good one..!) the cinema has a drinks licence  Is that enough to convince you yet?
