Fabric in London is a good club, not really a rave but an excellent night out

Now micky your faced with a bit of a dilema here as it is a well known fact that Rave is long since dead and has been taken over by the so called "guestlist" club, where former acid culture hippies, get it on in a more sober and luxurious atmosphere. In short they grew up!

But fear not my cosmonautical friend as there is a solution, there is a large selection of clubs who continue to play out and are dotted all over london, my question to you though is what music are you into? How do you dress? Are you a wall flower or a floor banger? These will help me to work out a half decent listing for you!

Hi Mickey,
Here's my rundown of the clubs :-

The Fridge - essential for a seriously mad clubnight. Specialises in hard house and is situated in an old theatre which gives it a fantastic layout with laods of places to wander if you're not up for dancing! Very laid back with a good age range...double check by phoning them first as you may end up at a gay night there which aint my bag and to be honest not a very friendly club environment if you're straight from 3 previous visits. One of the best clubnights I've had here is Logics birthday night, usually in August. One of the most visual club experiances I've seen, with dancing orcs, fireworks, sycronised dancers, clip from films tied in with the fireworks...essential clubbing

Fabric - this club is starting to evolve. For far too long this had a very young crowd, but was recently there for a Tom Middleton gig and saw the fantastic Rhinoceros, giving the whole club scene a fresh rock sound. Loved the live band vibe they had there recently

The End - classic clubbing from Mr C, although if you fancy a seat if you're monged then there is nowhere to sit, and the AKA bar upstairs is always rammed. As for the excellent music played by Layo and Bushwacka.....too small a dancefloor

Neighbourhood - far too expensive (£5 a drink + ) and home to the 'its dark, I'm inside and I'm wearing sunglasses' crowd...yawn, but also home ot some wicked US house nights, although the Fridge has one of these nights each month.

Kings Cross is becoming a mecca for clubbing with the likes of Egg / the cross (good US house, but requires you look cooool) / skalia (taken some nights from the Fridge including Frantic, I think).

Turnmills - an old favourite of mine and had some seriously good night with the likes of the Chemical Bros / Fatboy / Tall Pall etc. Well worth checking out, but I'd go on a smaller night or out of sync with paydays as they let far too many people in which is the clubs main failing

Have fun and be careful!

Nice one, I guess that run down takes care of what I was going to say before I had a chance of answering. I was going to recommend Egg in Kings Cross especially as it has become a haven for the now mature (and employed) children of the days of acid house. Great nightspot!

One of the major issues you will face though is that from week to week, the clubs will vary in atmosphere and it seems more and more that uniformity just isn't possible in the rave scene anymore.

What I would recommend you do is pick your promoter, and pick them well. Groups running events such as Air, in my view are once again making a massive impact in London. This more than anything could be attributed to the fact that the market seems to be saturated leaving clubbers confused and not knowing where to look. Choosing a good club promoter may make you feel a bit like a sound groupie but at least you will know what your getting in advance and you can expect the best from them as they strive to maintain their client base.

If you are looking to do this you first port of call would be to grab some flyers and take some spare time to have a read and see what appeals to you the most. This will give you a chance to compare line-ups, genres and venues for different club nights as well as pit them against the superclub’s "in-house" nights.

If you don't know where to grab some decent flyers I can recommend three possibilities, the first being to take a leisurely stroll down Camden High Street on a Saturday and allow yourself to be attacked by every available street team. Come to think of it, it would better you didn't.
A more reasonable choice would be to get yourself down to a few record shops, the best place to go would be Soho. As it is a central location any half decent promoter will take the time to get down there and put down some flyers leaving you with an immense selection. You will also have the bonus of being able to pick up flyer packs (bound envelopes of different club nights) which usually come with a free poster (9 times out of 10 for fabric).
Your third option would then be to contact a company which actually prints the flyers (I would recommend Mo-Shon as they do distribute a large number of flyer packs). Simply kindly ask them if they have a mailing list and they will keep you updated on what’s what for the next few weeks.

Hope this info has been of some help. I have stuck some additional info below, hope it will be of some use.

Soho Record Shops
There is a great selection of shops found by the Market in Soho on Berwick Street. To get there, go to Tottenham Court Road or Oxford Circus Station, make your way down Oxford Street towards the alternate station to the one you chose and you should find Berwick Street at a turn off opposite to the Plaza. Make your way down the road and all the record shops with free flyers are on the left hand side, plus one on the opposite side by subway. All of these shops have a great choice of free magazines, flyers and flyer packs available.

Hey Guys!!

I too am new to London (hasn't even been a week yet. I'm originally from Melbourne in Australia and so far travelled through all of europe looking for a place with a scene as strong as Melbourne but so far no luck. Hopefully London can change that. I love Hard Trance and Techno.....Fav dj's include Scott Project, Cosmic Gate, Hennes and Cold, Dave Clarke, Asyss among others. I prefer to wear cargo's and runners (comfy stuff) and love to dance till the sun comes up. I've checked out the tnt magazine and so far HUJE and Afterlife (for sunday recovery) are appealing to me. Has anyone been? Can offer this chicky any advice? Thanks Happy

Have you thought about The Church. It mainly consists of several hundred Aussies and Kiwis helplessly inebriated by the bring your own beer policy. Not too sure if the music will be your thing (then again most people only turn up for the alcohol) but it should be a great opportunity to meet up with other Australians who just may be into the same scene which you were into back home. The strange thing you will find with the church is that although it is in a sense a club the guests are by no way attending for the music or the live acts, They are there to get drunk, have a laugh and have a good time with like minded people. Although I do use the term like minded very loosley as you will find that there is a very broad spectrum of characters in attendance.

If you do go, you are guaranteed to have a good time and meet some great people.

The Church is based in legendary concert venue The Forum, for more info on The Forum check out:
