On 27 November 2008, the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, announced his intention to remove the Western Extension of the Congestion Charging zone, following a non-statutory consultation with the public and stakeholders.

69 per cent of people asked during the consulatation supported the removal, while 12 per cent supported a change to the way it works with only 19 per cent actually wanting it to stay.

Public opinion figures like that really make you wonder what Ken was thinking when he was planning the Westward extension.

I personally think the congestion charge kind of works in the very central areas of the city/west end but was always going to be a problem when used in more residential parts of London. I can't help thinking that there is a better solution than this out there, something like a ban on cars entering the zones between 8 and 6. Whilst this wouldn't make any money for the GLA it would achieve what the congestion charging zone seems not to.

I'll now open this up to the floor....

The people who complete those public opinion surveys are the 4x4 toffs who live in Kensington & Chelsea and object to paying money that they clearly have plenty of (probably because of this penny-inching) to take precious Tarquin to his private school around the corner. They're always going to be more vocal than your average person and have the best connections.. Ken was the only person who had a thick enough skin to stand up to them - Boris is too similar to them to be objective.
