All In London Review

offers amazing riverside views

Review Image
I often stroll along the South Bank and there are so many restaurants that I often overlook those that are in a prominent position. The Wharf is on the corner of Gabriel’s Wharf and doesn’t look very exciting from the outside – situated as it is directly opposite the popular Gourmet Pizza restaurant.

However, if you battle through the tables and chairs on the ground floor terrace and climb the stairs to the upper level it offers amazing riverside views from both al fresco and inside dining areas.

I don’t think it will ever win any awards for stylish décor – but it’s clean and functional. It almost feels like a seafront establishment in Boston. And it’s ideal for families – there are large tables available and the menu is very child-friendly. Although there were quite a few couples when we went representing all age groups.

My friend had the risotto – the seafood variety (£13.95 – there is also a plain and chicken version) which arrived with a generous garnish that served as a side salad. The rice had been cooked well and the texture and flavour were good.

My cheese burger with fries (£12.95) appeared as a well-structured stack and the toppings were good although the burger itself was a little overcooked and rather dry. The glass of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc (£7.75) was excellent.

Other menu options included:
Starters: Calamari, Mussels, Tiger Prawns, Caesar salad and soup
Salads: Roasted butternut, chargrilled chicken, seared tuna and grilled salmon
Grill and seafood: Fish and chips, Rib eye steak, burgers (chicken and vegetarian options)
Pasta: arrabiata, lasagne, smoked salmon tagliatelle, seafood linguine
Desserts: Cake of the day, white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake, apple tart, ice cream and cheeseboard

£34.65 (without service) seemed like excellent value for money considering the incredible view we had of the river, the relaxed informality and the pleasant waiting staff.

On views and value for money, this place scores 10. But I adjusted this for a number of reasons – the large tables closest to the river were reserved for groups and there was only one (occupied) table for two with the same vista, the table was sticky, the music was loud, the waiters forgot to bring our bread basket before our meal as requested and my burger was rather overdone.

The only other place I have found that is inexpensive but has similarly spectacular views is the relatively new Pizza Express just by The Globe.
