All In London Review

The Shacklewell Arms

Review Image
Taking the name of the street that it stands on, The Shacklewell Arms would come across as an odd sort of place if it was anywhere other than Dalston. How can a relatively removed local pub attract such an ace musical lineup, what convinced the gourmet hotdog guys to start selling from the pub and what’s with this tropical vibe?

Thankfully, because it’s Dalston these questions answer themselves. The Shacklewell Arms adds up to far more than the sum of its parts due in part to the intensive roster of entertainment on offer. Bands like Jacuzzi Boys – up and coming types to get you whooping – play the small stage and in a way it has a little of Brixton’s, Windmill about it. The TV shows live football and the food is provided by the hotdogs - amazing tubes of ground beef without a tin of brine in sight. There’s even a record store operating from behind the bar, slanging vinyl to the hip customers the pub attracts.

The beer is nothing to get too excited about, but no matter, everything else about this weird and wonderful pub is great. In fact maybe it was the street that took its name from the pub?

Crowd-surfing anyone?

The Shacklewell Arms is the staging area for London bands on their way to getting big. But it’s not just local bands. Europe, America and Asia have all inspired great nights in the Dalston back room, which comes complete with a rather charming bar to boot.

East London Bars: cooler than penguin piddle.

The Shacklewell Arms is Dalston’s reigning queen of live music. Don’t be fooled by the muddled interior of the pub on Shacklwell Lane, it hosts some spectacular live shows along with live football and gourmet hotdogs.

We went last night to the Arms to conclude our New Years celebration. The were good vibes in the space and our beer was served with a smile. The space kept on surprising me as it offers the visitor a pub, then there is a club, and completely in the back, passed the men's room doors on the right, there is even a sort of terras space. Yes, it really is a place where you never get bored.

In all honesty my experience is slightly colored by an overconsumption of alcoholic beverages, nevertheless it was a pleasant place to be. The prices of the drinks I simply can't recall. Neither the kind of drinks served, but I vaguely remember myself dancing to an old Madonna tune in the empty club room with a pint of beer.
