Field hockey as it is seen in modern times can be traced back to the mid 19th century and was developed mainly in the British Isles as a way of allowing sportsmen to partake in a winter hobby when the football season had ended. It was a firm favourite with the British Army and as such the game itself spread quickly across the world. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the game came off the traditional grass playing fields to use synthetic material making the movement of the ball much easier for the players.

The pitch itself is outdoor and ninety one by fifty five metres. Each team has eleven players and the aim of the game is to get the hockey ball, through the use of a stick into the opponent’s net. In order to score a goal the player must be within a certain area in front of the net. Each match lasts 70 minutes and the winners are the team with the most goals.

Initially, hockey entered the Olympic Games in 1908 but then took a break until the 1920 Olympics in Antwerp. Since then it has been a popular and well attended event. It was only played by men with the first women’s game being played in the 1980s. In fact, due to the perceived danger of the game women did not enter the sport until the late 19th century.
