All In London Review

Worth it alone for one of the most interesting ways you'll enter a bar in London.

The Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town opened to some hype a couple of years ago and despite the fact that it sounded dangerously faddy, it has built on its initial success.

We don’t perhaps have to be so hush-hush about its location anymore, or more accurately, its entrance. Located within the Spitalfields branch of the Breakfast Club, the secret isn’t really all that hard to spot. Enter the restaurant and your instincts might even be to ask why there is a large Smeg fridge lent against a wall. This friends, is the entrance and despite already knowing about it on our visit, it still remained a novel experience.

Once in, you descend the stairs and find yourself in a basement bar done up with exposed brickwork and wood, high tables and retro kitsch. Style is matched by substance. The décor is as much of a draw as the novelty entrance and importantly, the drinks are up to scratch. Classics cocktails, house concoctions and a good range of beer and wine make the variety a bit more forgiving than some speakeasies. So whether or not you know the difference between your dry and your perfect Manhattan, you won’t feel left out.

If you’re looking for one of the more alternative nights out in Shoreditch then a visit to see the Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town should deliver. Impressive both inside and out, it will be a surprise for anybody who isn’t in on the disguised entrance. Weekend nights are lively with an amped up music policy while weekdays make for a perfect date spot.

Every night should be cocktail night

This Spitalfields speakeasy might have one of the strangest names on the cocktail scene but its entrance alone is worth a look. Concealed and clever, it’s almost a bonus that the drinks live up to its radical décor.

Anybody who is anybody...

It’s gaudy and ever so slightly tacky, but how can you help but love entering the Mayor of Scaredy Cat through its Smeg Fridge entrance? The atmosphere here is less hushed back alley and more basement club at times, but the cocktails are spot on the money.

It’s all about the secret entrance that leads into the basement cocktail bar. On first glance the place is merely an all-day Breakfast Club diner, but look again…
